Taekwondo is a modern Korean martial art, characterized by fast, high, jumping, spinning kicks. It is an all round program that offers self-defence training, physical exercise, and artistic expression; all taught by an experienced professional instructor. Evidence that Martial Arts were being practiced at that time can be found in tombs where wall paintings show two men in fighting-stance. Meaning of the Term Taekwondo The word karate empty hand is a Japanese word that has developed into a generic term for all types of Asian fighting arts. Actually, there are three main divisions of the generic martial art of karate: actual karate is an Okinawan-Japanese style of fighting, with abrupt movements along straight lines; Kung-fu tasks and Chuan-fa: system of boxing are Chinese styles that use flowing, circular movements; and Taekwondo that incorporates the abrupt, linear movements of karate and the circular patterns of Kung-fu with its own unique kicking techniques. Literally translated, Taekwondo breaks down to tae meaning to kick with the foot, kwon meaning to punch or strike with the hand, and do meaning art or way, Therefore, Taekwondo translates to the art of kicking and punching.
